Futurefarmers. Neighbou*ring
Through their site-specific, process-oriented work, Futurefarmers enter into relation with our neighbour, Danube. Approaching this body of water as a subject of mutual influence that humans shape and that shapes life around it. Drawing on its rich etymology, they highlight how ‘neighbour’ is closely connected to land cultivation and the processes of growth and existence hbour that shapes and influences the life around it. Drawing on its rich etymology, they highlight how ‘neighbour’ is closely connected to land cultivation and the processes of growth and existence. Inspired by this lineage they work with local river communities, including swimming clubs, community gardening associations, beekeepers and anglers, to compile a material archive of sediment. These engagements serve as the starting point for reflection and exchange. Futurefarmers work with sound, walking and improvised public actions to shift our perspective on and experience of Danube: from something that we live beside to a vibrant, living being that is always in a web of relations.
Futurefarmers is an international work group founded in San Francisco in 1995 and active in Ghent, Belgium, since 2003. It comprises artists, architects, computer programmers, farmers, writers and anthropologists who collaborate in varying constellations. Pursuing a process-oriented approach, Futurefarmers weave materials and communities into situations, thereby cultivating public life at specific sites.
