Grüne Wäsche Wien is a cooperation between KunstHausWien and the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. As part of this project, students from the studio “Art and Image | Context” critically examine the issues of greenwashing and certification.

The group exhibition addresses climate measures in Vienna and scrutinises the global dimensions of our imperial mode of living. Interacting with established artists and experienced activists, the students have developed artistic works, performances, and installations which, starting from the Garage, stretch out across the inner courtyard and into public space. The exhibition also draws connections to the history of Vienna’s Weißgerber district. Once dominated by tanneries, today it is shaped by tourism.

The city is changing. Given the threat of an expansion of green capitalism, while democratic decision-making processes are ablished at the very same time, it is more important than ever to foster a sensorium capable of distinguishing between illusion and reality in climate politics. The market and its instruments will not solve the climate crisis – instead, they will send temperatures soaring. Greenwashing contributes to this dynamic.

The exhibition is accompanied by a diverse public programme of interventions, discussions, and kids’ workshops, as well as a film screening and a bicycle tour.
